Can Intermittent Fasting Cause Diarrhoea?

Diarrhea is a condition in which feces are ejected from the bowels continually in liquids that are loose and watery.

This is usually caused by a virus, or  bacteria-contaminated food. Less often, it can be a sign of another malady like inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome among others.

Frequent stool and vomiting are the most popular symptoms of diarrhea.

Intermittent fasting is a meal timing schedule that revolves around eating and not eating over a given period and sometimes involving watching calories per diet.

 Fasting for short periods helps people eat fewer calories.One usually gets into an intermittent state of fast overnight. If you go to bed at around 10.00 pm and you don’t eat breakfast until 7.00 or 8.00 am, you are in a fasting state. If you can extend this state by another six to eight hours, then you will be able to see an even better effect.

It’s unusual to get diarrhea during fasting, but it does occur.

Intermittent fasting doesn’t usually cause diarrhea. When an individual is not eating, there’s no food in his digestive system, which makes it improbable for him to have diarrhea.

 Diarrhea is induced by food and water moving extremely fast through your digestive system. The food passes through without breaking down and you don’t absorb its nutrients.

     It is uncommon to have watery stools during intermittent fasting. If you get diarrhea in the course of the fast (when you’re having the only water with, no food), you should end your fast instantly. Diarrhea during intermittent fasting or fasting as a whole may be dangerous. 

     Suffering diarrhea after a fast most often associates with the feed you select to break a fast. Normally, overeating or too eating too quickly can upset your stomach which may cause diarrhea.

Besides the amount of food and quickness of eating, the macronutrients of your first meal also impact your digestion.

Eating too much fat at a meal is a  popular spur of diarrhea after fasting. Food with lots of fats can cause diarrhea due to excess bile secretion, or by dominating your body’s capacity in absorbing fats.

Here are some directions to do intermittent fasting :

1. The 16/8 method
It involves fasting every day for about 16 hours and restricting your daily eating window to approximately 8 hours.
2. The 5:2 method
The 5:2 diet, or the Fast Diet, involves eating 500–600 calories for 2 days out of the week and eating normally the other 5 days
3.  Eat Stop Eat is an intermittent fasting program with one or two 24-hour fasts per week.
4.  Alternate-day fasting involves fasting about every other day, either by not eating anything or by eating only a few hundred calories.
5. The Warrior Diet encourages subsisting on only small amounts of vegetables and fruits during the day and then eating one huge meal at night.
6. Another way to do intermittent fasting is to simply skip one or two meals when you don’t feel hungry or don’t have time to eat.
       If you decide to try intermittent fasting, keep in mind that diet quality is crucial.
    Health experts suggest that eating probiotic foods and taking probiotic supplements helps with diarrhea .

It is advised that,If you continually  experience bowel movements with loose stools during the fast state, make sure to restore by drinking extra liquids.

Avoid vigorous exercise, especially in the heat, when you may already be dehydrated from diarrhea.

When you break your fast, oral rehydration solution (ORS)should be taken to speed the rehydration process.

Oral rehydration solutions hydrate your body faster and more thoroughly than water, especially if you’re experiencing diarrhea.

Diarrhea can happen for diverse reasons and it usually goes away on its own in one to three days.

Visiting the bathroom with urgency may happen more frequently than normal. You may also feel bloated, have lower abdominal cramping and sometimes experience nausea.

Intermittent fasting therefore, has no factual effect which may be a probable cause of diarrhoea.

Any symptom of diarrhea during intermittent fast should be checked by a health expert to avert any danger whatsoever.
